Karie has a transdisciplinary background in social science, business, government, ecological activism, and philosophy. She is a scholar activist at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) where she is researching the historical bioregional movement and is co-organizing the 11th Turtle Bioregional Congress happening in September, 2026.
She is the co-author of the forthcoming chapter, “Bioregions and Earth Law” in the 2nd edition of the legal textbook Earth Law: Emerging Ecocentric Law—A Guide for Practitioners (Feb 2026).
Karie is also passionate about film as a powerful storytelling medium and was an Executive Director for the short documentary Last Stand: Saving the Elwha River’s Legacy Forests. The film gave her an opportunity to support the amazing work of the Earth Law Center and to raise awareness of the importance of legacy forests for carbon sequestration, water quality, erosion control and so many other benefits to the watershed and larger Earth Community.She is currently working on a short film with Louis Fox called The Future is Bioregional that will be released in December, 2025. Louis Fox will be on site with her this year to shoot promotional video for the 11th Turtle Island Bioregional Congress and this content may be used in a longer format film.
